Getting Started

Child Adoption

Adoption is a wonderful way to build your family, and we’re here to support and guide you as you explore this option.

Before we get started, here are some adoption prep ideas to think about:

  1. Consider the child you wish to adopt. How old is this child? Is the child a boy or a girl? Do they have siblings? Having a mental picture can help us match you with a child that is well-suited to you and your family, although please note that the majority of children looking for families are age 8 and older.
  2. Consider your support system. Do you have friends or family members who can help you with the day-to-day of raising a child? What changes might you need to make in your home? What type of resources exist in your community? What type of assistance might you need from your social worker or other professionals?
  3. Prepare for the licensing process. This includes: a home study in which a social worker will visit you and your family to ensure you are able to care for a child; 27 hours of PRIDE classes; a criminal background check; fingerprinting; and medical clearance. The entire process can take several months.
